New York City is one of the most diverse cities in the world, and our food scene is proof. Every tradition, style, and diet is represented here, each with its own flair. What sets us apart is our experience in the kitchen and our passion for healthy, allergy-friendly food. Sensible Edibles has been in the game for over 30 years. Enough to make any New Yorker look twice! We're here for celiacs and vegans first, but if you're dairy free, nut free, soy free, or just curious, come in for a sample. We promise you'll be hooked.
Sensible Edibles is a family-run bakery that's been serving the Queens community since 1992. We started from the bottom (just 3 humble gluten-free muffins) and now we're here: 100% gluten-free muffins, bars, brownies, cakes, cookies, and scones! We've reformulated each recipe, one by one, with patience and love. We think our products are better for it, and our customers agree. Over the years, we've expanded our wholesale operations, so you can find our snacks throughout Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan.
We make all of our products in house and hand-deliver overnight, so customers get their treats fresh. Now, with our online store, we're able to ship nationwide, so you can enjoy our baked goods at home. (See our shipping policies here.)
Our current owner, Wassem Moarsi, has an academic background in biology and chemistry, but baking is in his bones. His scientific curiosity and passion for health fuel this bakery. All he wants is to make nutritious snacks and show this planet some respect. Is that too much to ask? We think not.
So how does a dessert bakery have the nerve (the gall!) to talk about health and nutrition? Well, we believe snacks are an essential part of a full life. For celebrations and pick-me-ups. For spreading joy and encouragement. For brightening up cloudy days. The key is to snack smart.
At Sensible, we seek out the finest organic ingredients. Why organic? Because organic foods are more nutritious. They're free from pesticides and other harsh chemicals used in conventional farming. When we eat food that's been genetically modified and toxically treated, our bodies don't get the nourishment they need. We consume traces of pesticides which destroy our microbiome and make us sick. Your stomach may feel full, but because you're under-nourished, you experience cravings. When you eat a Sensible Edibles treat, your body gets the rich food it craves, leaving you satisfied and nourished.
Organic farming practices create rich and fertile soil, reduce erosion, and promote biodiversity. This ensures a more sustainable agricultural system. Strong soil means better water retention, so organic farming conserves water. No synthetic pesticides and fertilizers means our water supply doesn't get contaminated. It keeps farmworkers from getting sick due to exposure, and it protects wildlife.
You might be watching your sugar intake. So are we. In a world filled with overly sugary snacks, finding healthier alternatives is crucial. At Sensible Edibles Bakery, we’re committed to reducing sugar in our treats without compromising on taste. We use fiber and protein-rich ingredients to slow digestion and stabilize blood sugar levels. This means you can enjoy our desserts without the dreaded sugar crash.
Here are some tips to help you enjoy sweet treats strategically and responsibly:
- Drink water with apple cider vinegar. A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar before your snack can significantly decrease your blood sugar spike.
- Consume healthy fats before snacking. Healthy fats can reduce your blood sugar spike by up to 76%.
- Add thylakoids to your diet. Found in foods like spinach, thylakoids can help curb your cravings for sweets.
- Take a hike! (Or a walk.) Physical activity after eating helps your body consume the sugar you just ate as energy rather than storing it as fat.
Let's take a moment to introduce you to our Salted Almond Cookie. Made with almond flour, organic oat flour, hazelnut flour, non-GMO coconut oil (rich in antioxidants), and organic cane sugar. Not only is this cookie delicious, it has 9g of protein and 6g of fiber. Simple, recognizable ingredients, not processed, no preservatives. We like the idea of a cookie spoiling in a few days—that tells us it's natural. If your cookie doesn’t expire for weeks or months, then you need to ask yourself: how the heck is my body going to handle these chemicals?
So yeah, we think we're the best vegan and gluten-free bakery in NYC, and we rest our case. Join us in our mission to provide healthy, allergen-friendly desserts that everyone can enjoy. Try our products, and taste the difference quality ingredients make.
