Dietary preferences have never been more varied. When it comes to choosing the right milk alternative, it's easy to get overwhelmed with all the options available. Whether you're lactose-intolerant, vegan, gluten-sensitive, or just looking for a healthier milk option, we’re with Team Oat Milk. In this blog post, we'll show you how to make your own unsweetened oat milk at home. It's delicious, sustainable, and easily customizable.

Why Choose Homemade Oat Milk?

Oat milk is compliant with most common allergies and sensitivities. It’s plant-based, nut-free, soy-free, and gluten-free. Just make sure to purchase organic certified gluten-free oats. This is what we use at our bakery. Organic ensures that no harmful pesticides were used on the plants. Certified gluten-free means your oats were not processed in a facility shared with gluten containing grains. If you have Celiac Disease, even a small trace of gluten can trigger an allergic reaction, so cross-contamination is a serious concern.

Oat milk has a smooth, creamy texture which makes it great for cereal, smoothies, and hot beverages. It also froths up nicely and contains more protein and fiber than almond milk. Non-dairy milks in general require less energy, land, and water to produce, so they are much more environmentally friendly. Oat milk comes in second only to soy milk in terms of the least amount of water required to produce. And it’s good to know that no animals get harmed in their production. Making your own milk at home has the added benefit of reducing single-use packaging. You can store your batch in a reusable pitcher or glass jar.

Homemade recipes are also great because you control of the ingredients. Store-bought milks contain additives, emulsifiers, sweeteners, and preservatives. Common synthetic emulsifiers like carboxymethylcellulose and polysorbate 80 can harm your gut microbiome. And while some consumers may appreciate the vitamin D and calcium boost store brands provide, we prefer getting our nutrients naturally and directly from food. Because we make small, manageable batches at a time, the milk is consumed quickly, eliminating the need for preservatives.

So, are you ready to make your own oat milk? Chances are, you already have everything you need to get started:

Ingredients

1 cup organic certified gluten-free rolled oats
4 cups filtered water
A pinch of salt

Directions

  1. Rinse the Oats: There's no need to soak the oats beforehand. Just rinse your oats thoroughly under cold water. This removes excess starch and keeps your milk from becoming too gummy.
  2. Blend: In a blender, combine the oats, filtered water, and a pinch of salt. Blend until the mixture is smooth and creamy, usually about 30 seconds. Be careful: over-blending will create a gooey texture, so don't overdo it!
  3. Strain: Using a nut milk bag, cheesecloth, or a fine-mesh strainer, strain the mixture into a jug or glass jar. This step removes any remaining oat solids, giving you silky-smooth oat milk.
  4. Store: Store in the refrigerator. Oat milk typically lasts for up to five days. Shake well before each use, as natural separation can occur.

Modifications:

  • We prefer our unsweetened recipe, but if you have a sweet tooth, try adding a 1-2 dates, or a tablespoon of maple syrup or brown sugar.
  • Experiment with flavors: cocoa powder, vanilla extract, matcha powder, mixed berries.
